They perform procedures from routine wisdom teeth extractions to facial reconstruction surgery. In some cases, an oral surgeon might have to do a bone graft before the implant. A bone graft is necessary when there isn't enough bone present to hold the titanium post for the implant securely. When a person has a condition called sleep apnea, they can consistently stop breathing while sleeping. This is usually caused by their jaw being poorly positioned or soft tissue in the airway opening. Several procedures can treat sleep apnea. If a temporomandibular joint disorder is causing the jaw structure to be abnormal, an oral surgeon can treat the condition and provide some relief by surgically correcting the problem. In cases where the lower and upper jaws don't develop at a similar rate, the function and appearance of the jaws can be compromised. Congenital disabilities sometimes cause these abnormalities. In this case, orthognathic surgery can help improve the alignment of the patient's jaw.
