If I Play Pickleball, Do I Need a Mouth Guard?

Nearly 40 million Americans regularly play pickleball. Whether you have been playing pickleball for a few weeks or a few years, it is important to protect yourself from injuries. You may be thinking about twisted wrists or ankles, but our dentists are more concerned with protecting your teeth. Here is some information about why you may need a mouthguard if you play pickleball.

Contact Sports and Teeth

One out of every five injuries that adults suffer is to their head or their mouths. While any sport can cause an injury, contact sports are more dangerous to your teeth than non-contact sports, such as running. Contact sports put people in close proximity to each other, with elbows, knees, balls, and rackets flying, which increases the chances you could take a pickleball to the face.

If you get hit in the mouth while playing pickleball or another contact sport, you could end up with cut lips, cheeks, tongue, or damage to veneers, crowns, bridges, and other dental work. Many adults have spent thousands of dollars on their teeth over the years, and they do not want to see all of that investment go to waste.

You Can Wear A Mouthguard

Many adults think mouthguards are something you buy your kids when they are playing youth sports. However, mouthguards do not have to just protect the braces your child is wearing while playing baseball or volleyball - they can help your teeth as well.

Mouthguards come in many different styles, thicknesses, and materials. The type of mouthguard you choose should correspond to how much work you have done in your mouth and what type of protection you need. Our dentists can talk with you about what type of mouthguard is right for your next pickleball tournament.
